Elsie’s inspiring journey to empower her community

In a heart-warming tale of determination and ambition, a dedicated nurse from Papua New Guinea, Elsie Jeakau Tomili, has not only overcome numerous challenges but is also making a significant impact in her community. Her journey is one of inspiration and exemplifies how education and perseverance can empower individuals to change the lives of those around them.

Elsie’s journey began as a trauma and integrated care nurse in Papua New Guinea and witnessing the pressing need for specialised care in her community, Elise’s unwavering determination led her to pursue international studies in Australia, where she studied Certificate III in Aged Care and a Diploma in Community Services. Pursuing her studies abroad was no easy feat, as the specialised programs she aspired to were not readily available in Papua New Guinea. Elsie was committed to bridging this gap, determined to return to her homeland with the knowledge and expertise needed to address the unique challenges her community faced.

It was with the help of Troy Scott, a dedicated Senior Trainer and Assessor at Sarina Russo Institute, that Elsie received guidance and support during this crucial phase of her education. Troy proved to be instrumental in her growth, offering a hands-on approach and sharing their extensive experience with her.

Speaking about her experience with the Sarina Russo Institute and the assistance provided by Troy, Elsie shared, “The educators at the Sarina Russo Institute were incredibly supportive and hands-on. They provided me with the guidance I needed to excel in my studies and encouraged me every step of the way. Their expertise was invaluable.”

Elsie’s incredible story doesn’t stop at her education. During her studies, she faced a new challenge: finding ‘placement’ that catered to her passion and skills. This is where Joblinx, a career placement service, stepped in. They took the time to understand Elsie’s desires and needs, ensuring that she pursued a fulfilling career that aligned with her goals and aspirations.

Joblinx, working hand in hand with the Sarina Russo Institute, connected Elsie with opportunities that not only met her requirements but also allowed her to make a meaningful difference in her community. As a result, she was able to complete her placement with Red Rose Foundation Australia where she devoted herself to aiding survivors of domestic violence, particularly strangulation, and sexual abuse, helping them heal and rebuild their lives. Her placement experience in Australia exposed her to international best practices and provided invaluable insights into the specialised care required for survivors of trauma and abuse.

Elsie’s story is a testament to the power of education, determination, and the support of institutions like the Sarina Russo Institute and Joblinx. Her incredible dedication and her unwavering commitment to helping survivors of trauma, domestic abuse, and sexual abuse is not only admirable but is a true reflection of the positive impact that individuals can have when they are equipped with the right tools and opportunities.

As Elsie continues her work, she remains a shining example of how education and support can change lives and empower individuals to create lasting positive change in their communities.
